Registration Deadline Approaching For Moore Square Design Competition

The deadline to register for the City of Raleigh’s Moore Square Design Competition is just two weeks away. The competition is being held to find a new design for Moore Square in Downtown Raleigh. Eligible to participate are planning, design, preservation, and engineering professionals, and college students and recent graduates with major studies in these fields. The last day to register is Sept. 10 at 5 p.m.

The entry fee for the Moore Square Design Competition is $100 for professionals and $50 for college students. To register, visit www.raleighnc.gov/greatplacesmooresquare or contact Trisha Hasch, project manager, in the Department of City Planning, at 807-8480.

Ideas gathered from the public at three community open call sessions will be shared with participants in the design competition. These ideas are on display at http://www.flickr.com/photos/40641567@N03/sets/72157621894790942/ or at the City of Raleigh Urban Design Center, 133 Fayetteville St. A five-member jury will review design concepts submitted in the design competition and select the first-place, second-place and third-place designers. The jury also will award honorable mention recognition. Prizes will be given to the top three finishers, with first place receiving $6,000; second place, $4,000; and third place, $2,000. The City of Raleigh intends to offer the first-place finisher an opportunity to assemble a team of professionals to participate in the Moore Square master planning process. The master plan team will hone the winning design concept into a schematic design project.

The last day to submit conceptual design proposals for the Moore Square Design Competition is Sept. 29 at 5 p.m. The winning designs will be announced on Oct. 24 at noon in Moore Square during the Raleigh Wide Open 4 celebration. They will be on public display at the Urban Design Center and posted on the City of Raleigh’s website. Citizens will be given an opportunity to comment on the first-place conceptual design.

The City of Raleigh hopes to approve a final design plan for Moore Square by late 2010. The State of North Carolina, which owns the downtown square, will have to agree to the final design before construction could begin.
