Section Of Benson Road In Garner Closed For Water Main Installation
Beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 25, a short section of Benson Road, also known as N.C. 50, between West Main Street and West Garner Road in Garner will be temporarily closed to through traffic. The closure is needed to accommodate the installation of a 48-inch diameter water transmission main under Benson Road. The transmission main is for the City of Raleigh’s new Dempsey E. Benton Water Treatment Plant, located off of Benson Road at Buffaloe Road.
Detour signs will be posted to direct and maintain traffic flow around the construction area. The section of Benson Road is scheduled to reopen to through traffic on Feb. 4 at 7 a.m.
Construction crews will be working on the 48-inch pipeline installation from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Town of Garner and Wake County emergency, safety and law enforcement agencies as well all other municipal services such as garbage and recycling pickup will be notified of the road closure and associated detour.
Motorists traveling along Benson Road in this area should proceed with caution and be aware of the detour signs, construction traffic and slow moving vehicles. The installation of the 48-inch diameter water transmission main is part of the City of Raleigh’s continuing effort to accommodate customer growth in the City’s water and sewer service area. The transmission main will carry water from the new Dempsey E. Benton Water Treatment Plant to downtown Raleigh for distribution into the City of Raleigh’s water system.
Scheduled to open in February, the $90.5 million Dempsey E. Benton Water Treatment Plant will have the capacity to treat up to 20 million gallons of water per day from Swift Creek reservoirs in Lake Benson and Lake Wheeler. The plant is named for Dempsey E. Benton, who served as Raleigh’s city manager from 1983-2000.
