Pre-Budget Public Hearing Set For Jan. 8


The Raleigh City Council will hold a pre-budget public hearing on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at 7 p.m. to receive public comment on the budget for the 2008-09 fiscal year, which begins July 1, 2008.

The public hearing will be held in the council chamber on the second floor of the Avery C. Upchurch Government Complex, 222 W. Hargett St.

The purpose of the public hearing is for residents to provide input to the council regarding budgetary matters prior to commencement of the City’s annual budget development process.  The city manager’s budget development process begins in January and follows with presentation of the proposed budget to the City Council in May. The council then holds another public hearing in June on the proposed budget and deliberates in weekly budget work sessions. Council members approve the official budget by July 1.

The current 2007-08 fiscal year budget for the City of Raleigh totals $557,066,589. The following is a breakdown of expenditures in the budget:

  • Public Safety, $134.6 million;
  • Capital Debt Service, $81.2 million;
  • Leisure Services, $75.5 million;
  • Public Utilities, $63.9 million;
  • Capital Improvements, $46 million;
  • Public Works and Public Transit, $44.7 million;
  • Community Development Services, $34.9 million;
  • General Government and External Agencies, $29.5 million;
  • Solid Waste Services, $22.7 million;
  • Information Technology, $13.3 million; and,
  • Financial Management, $10.9 million.
