Plaque Unveiling At Keeter Training Center's Smokehouse
The City of Raleigh Fire Department is placing a bronze plaque on the Smokehouse at the Keeter Training Center. The plaque commemorates the history of the Smokehouse, the oldest facility on the grounds of the training center.
The plaque will be formally unveiled on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. The Keeter Training Center is located at 105 Keeter Center Drive, just south of downtown.
The Smokehouse is used by the Fire Department for smoke training. It was built in 1964 from bricks from old Fire Station No. 5 on Oberlin Road. The old station was torn down to make way for a new fire station built on the same site at 300 Oberlin Road.
The unveiling of the Smokehouse plaque will be the first activity conducted by the Fire Department’s Historical Society that is being organized. Battalion Chief Luther Walters and Fire Department Historian Mike Legeros, a former City firefighter, are forming the Historical Society.
