On-Street Pay Stations To Change The Way Downtown Visitors Pay to Park

Beginning in January, visitors to downtown will have a new way to pay for on-street parking as new pay stations are installed.

In July, the Raleigh City Council approved the selection of Duncan Solutions to provide the on-street parking pay stations. Duncan Solutions will provide pay stations to the City for at least eight years. The Duncan Solutions VM pay stations will accept coin, Visa and Mastercard transactions, as well as a “pay-by-cell phone” option that may be introduced at a later time.

The new pay stations will be installed throughout the downtown core bounded by Edenton Street, South Street, Blount Street and Harrington Street. In addition, pay stations will be installed along Hillsborough Street and on Glenwood Avenue in the Glenwood South area. The pay stations will accept nickels, dimes and quarters and allow for payment in 15-minute increments from 15 minutes up the maximum time allowed for the particular time-zone. The existing green time zone signs will be replaced with blue metered parking signs that will provide instructions on how to pay for parking.

According to Gordon Dash, parking administrator for the City of Raleigh, “The new pay stations are meant to encourage a turnover in on-street parking spaces and allow visitors to downtown to have convenient access to short term parking. Those visitors that require more than two hours are encouraged to use the City’s parking garages.” It will still be a violation of the City’s parking ordinances to stay longer in a parking space than the maximum time allowed or over the time paid for on the meter.

Duncan Solutions VM pay stations use green cell zinc-air battery technology that contain no lead, creates no greenhouse gas and is classified as non-hazardous for disposal. To save energy, down-time maintenance costs caused by mechanical failure and to reduce litter the VM pay station does not print a receipt.
