Long Range Transportation Plan For Region Receives Air Quality Approval

The U.S. Department of Transportation has determined that the 2035 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) for the Triangle region meets air quality emission standards. This is the first year a unified LRTP was drafted by the region’s two transportation planning agencies, the North Carolina Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) and the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization (DCHC MPO. In years past, both agencies produced separate plans.

The staffs of CAMPO and DCHC MPO worked closely with the staff of the Triangle J Council of Governments and other state and federal agencies to produce the unified LRTP and air quality analysis for both MPOs. The U.S. Department of Transportation approved the document for being in conformance with the State of North Carolina’s plans for improving air quality in the Triangle. The Triangle region is designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as an air quality maintenance area for the carbon monoxide and eight-hour ozone standard.

CAMPO and DCHC MPO are the agencies recognized by state and federal law as being responsible for carrying out the transportation planning processes in the most of the Triangle region. CAMPO’s members come from 18 municipalities, including Raleigh, and five counties, including Wake, in the eastern part of the Triangle. The DCHC MPO is comprised of three counties and four municipalities in the western part of the Triangle.  Both MPOs have members representing other transportation agencies, including the N.C. Department of Transportation, the N.C Turnpike Authority, and Triangle Transit.

For more information about CAMPO, call the agency at 996-4390 or visit www.campo-nc.us.
