City Issues Comments On High Speed Rail Study
The City of Raleigh is sending a letter to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) containing its comments about a proposed high speed rail line in the Capital City.
The City Council voted today to authorize Mayor Charles Meeker to sign the letter and send it to NCDOT.
As part of a draft environmental impact statement for the Southeast High Speed Rail Study, NCDOT is studying the potential environmental impacts associated with a high speed rail line running through Raleigh. The proposed rail alignment includes numerous grade crossings and grade-separating crossings in the downtown area. The City’s comments on the plan -- drawn up after City staff reviewed the proposed high speed rail line -- identified potential adverse impacts and proposed alternative rail alignments and treatments for NCDOT to consider.
The City’s comments focused on seven main areas:
- Community characteristics, including barrier effects, aesthetics, compatibility with community goals, safety and grade crossings, and mobility and accessibility;
- Economy;
- Land use;
- Displacement and relocation;
- Utilities;
- Physical environmental resources/visual character; and
- Alternatives.
