Approval Given To Encroachment Agreement For Green Square Project
At its Nov. 17 meeting, the Raleigh City Council approved an encroachment agreement that helps pave the way for the State of North Carolina’s Green Square complex downtown.
Encroachments were granted for footings for an expansion of the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences called the Nature Research Center and for a skywalk over Salisbury Street that will connect the museum and nature center.
“This agreement is the last key link to a major downtown revitalization project,” City Attorney Thomas McCormick said. “It is important to the City of Raleigh and the State of North Carolina.”
The Nature Research Center will be a four-story, 80,000-square-foot environmental science center in the 100 block of West Jones Street, across Salisbury Street from the Museum of Natural Sciences. The estimated $104 million Green Square complex also will include a 172,000-square-foot office building in the 200 block of West Jones Street that will house the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
Construction of the Green Square complex is scheduled to be complete in 2011.
