City Attorney

Tom McCormick, City Attorney

City Attorney

The City Attorney's Office provides legal advice to the Mayor, members of the City Council, City Manager, and to each of the City’s Departments.  From time to time, the Council also assigns special projects to City Attorney, such as the preparation of special ordinances.  The Office advocates on the City’s behalf in federal and State Courts, the General Assembly, and before quasi-judicial bodies.  The office reviews each of the six to seven hundred contracts that the City enters each year and advises employees administering those contracts as issues arise.  The City Attorney represents the City’s interests in working with property owners, contractors, private citizens, and others who raise concerns about the City’s actions.  The City Attorney also enforces certain provisions of the Raleigh City Code.

The City Attorney is Thomas A. McCormick.  Mr. McCormick’s staff consists of five attorneys, one paralegal, and four legal specialists.

The Office represents City Departments, officials, and employees on matters involving City business.  Attorneys in the Office cannot give legal advice or provide legal representation to private citizens.  The Wake County District Attorney’s Office (919-755-4115), which is not part of the City of Raleigh, prosecutes traffic tickets and other infractions and crimes.  The United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North  (919-856-4530) handles matters involving federal law.
