Urban Design Conference Set for Saturday
The fifth annual Urban Design Conference will be held on Saturday, March 1 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Cardinal Club in downtown Raleigh at 150 Fayetteville St., suite 2800. Hosts of the conference are the City of Raleigh Department of City Planning, North Carolina State University’s College of Design and N.C. State Foundation.
The conference’s theme is “Urban Growth: Intelligent by Design.” The event will offer participants sustainable models, strategies and practical information for the planning, design, development and building needed to accommodate urban growth. This multidisciplinary conference will present the perspectives of developers, architects, planners, landscape architects and engineers. Topics will include infill development and renovation; high density, mixed-use and affordable housing projects; water conservation and management; sustainable site development; and local plans incorporating these best practices. At the conclusion of the conference, a panel discussion that will include all the presenters will offer additional time for questions.
Speakers at the conference will be Bill Struever, president and CEO of Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse; Michael Pyatok, founder of Pyatok Architects; Jose Alminana, landscape architect and architect with Andropogon Associates; William Hunt, assistant professor and extension specialist at N.C. State University; Mitchell Silver, director of the City of Raleigh Department of City Planning; and Heather Venhaus, environmental designer for the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and project manager for the Sustainable Sites Initiative. The panel moderator will be Paul Morris, vice president of planning and sustainable development for Cherokee.
