Mayor Of Charleston To Speak In Raleigh To Kick Off Preservation Month
Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. of Charleston, S.C., will be the guest speaker at a kickoff event in Raleigh for national Preservation Month, which is celebrated in May. Mayor Riley’s lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 28 at the Long View Center, 118 S. Person St.
The Raleigh Historic Districts Commission is sponsoring the lecture with support from Preservation North Carolina. The lecture is free and open to the public.
The topic of Mayor Riley’s lecture is “Preservation and Redevelopment of the American City: The Charleston Experience.” He will share his insight into the role of public leadership in historic preservation and community development.
Mayor Riley is widely recognized as one of the most visionary and highly effective governmental leaders in America. He is serving an unprecedented eighth term as mayor of Charleston. Under his leadership, Charleston has increased its commitment to racial harmony and progress, achieved a substantial decrease in crime, experienced a remarkable revitalization of its historic downtown business district, seen the creation and growth of Spoleto Festival U.S. A., built Waterfront Park, developed nationally acclaimed affordable housing, and experienced unprecedented growth. Mayor Riley has led a city government with an impressive record of innovation in public safety, housing, arts and culture, children’s issues, the creation of parks and other public spaces, and economic revitalization and development. Charleston consistently is recognized as one of the most livable and progressive cities in the United States.
Parking to attend Mayor Riley’s lecture will be available on the street and in the Moore Square Parking Deck, located at 233 S. Wilmington St.
