Council Refers Interim Public Art Program Resolution To Arts Commission
The Raleigh City Council decided today to refer to the City’s Arts Commission a resolution establishing an interim percent-for-art program. The Arts Commission will review the proposal and provide comments to the full council.
Under the proposed resolution, the City would allocate half of one percent of expenditures for capital improvement projects (public buildings, parks, and streetscapes) to the creation and development of public art. This funding initiative would begin with selected pilot projects planned for construction after April 1.
The interim percent-for-art program would be used until the City Council adopts an ordinance creating a permanent program.
Currently, there are 500 public art programs in the United States. Approximately 80 percent of these programs are supported by municipal governments. In North Carolina, there are five programs that operate under municipal percent-for-art ordinances.
