The City of Raleigh, joined by state and federal officials, broke ground today to formally begin construction of a state-of-the-art transit operations center. Mayor Charles Meeker presided over the ceremony.
The transit operations center will be located on 23 acres at 4104 Poole Road, just east of the Interstate 440 Beltline. The facility will replace Capital Area Transit’s (CAT) 30-year-old operations facility at 1430 S. Blount St. Construction of the new transit operations center is scheduled to be complete in the spring 2011.
The $21 million transit operations center is being primarily funded by $11.6 million from the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act, also know as the federal stimulus package. City and state funds also will be used on the project.
The transit operations center will consist of a 27,400-square-foot, two-story operations administration building; a single-story bus maintenance facility of 56,000 square feet; a 7,500-square-foot bus wash building; and a two-lane fueling depot building. The project also will include a bus shelter on Poole Road for CAT riders. The transit operations center will accommodate 125 buses, with the ability for expansion to 200 buses. The existing CAT operations facility on Blount Street can only accommodate up to 50 buses. With the additional space at the new transit operations center, CAT will be able to service more buses and make additional enhancements to its fleet to better accommodate riders. This, in turn, will improve CAT’s productivity in the future as new routes are added and improvements to current routes are made.
Brasfield & Gorrie, LLC is the construction contractor for the transit operations center. The company is proposing to subcontract 21.1 percent of the work to Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBE). This exceeds the City of Raleigh’s goal of 15 percent MWBE participation for major construction projects.
