Background: The City of Raleigh’s Comprehensive Plan identifies neighborhood park search areas that cannot be satisfied using traditional acquisition methods. The area identified as Neighborhood Park Search Area #39, bordered by Lynn, Creedmoor, Lead Mine, and Strickland Roads, was extensively researched to find property to purchase for park needs but was unavailable. In March 2008 the Budget & Economic Development Committee authorized the Parks and Recreation Department to pursue alternative options which has lead to the finalization of leased space at the Greystone Village Shopping Center located at 7713-55 Lead Mine Road. The space consists of 9,600 square feet of programmable space that will offer recreation services in accordance with the Comprehensive Plan.
Funding: Funding for the project was approved as part of the 2007 Park Bond Referendum
Programming Elements: The vision for this space will be to offer a wide variety of recreational programs for the neighboring community. The center would feature indoor playground elements, a dance/fitness studio, and two classrooms.
The center will offer a wide variety of opportunities in the education, fitness arts and social programs geared towards meeting the needs of the community. Classes and activities will be offered year-round and would be flexible depending on interests. A sample of offerings may include Yoga or Tai Chi, Beginner Tap or Ballroom Dance, Photography or Drawing, First Aid or Basic Spanish.
