Little Rock Greenway Trail Extension

Citizen Advisory Council (CAC) District: South Central

Background

The Capital Area Greenway (CAG) Master Plan was first adopted by City Council in 1976 and includes over 270 miles of stream corridors identified for protection and the development of a greenway trail.

The Little Rock Greenway corridor extends from Walnut Creek near the intersection of State and Peterson Streets north to and through Chavis Park. The trail has been constructed with the exception of a short segment that begins south of Bragg Street and extends one half mile terminating at Peterson Street and connecting to the existing Walnut Creek Trail. The Walnut Creek Wetland Center is proposed to be constructed at the intersection of Walnut and Petersen Streets as well. The completion of this short segment will provide the opportunity for downtown residents and visitors to access the trail, Walnut Creek Wetland Center, and the Walnut Creek Greenway at Chavis Park.

The 2003 Park Bond Referendum included funding for the design and construction of this greenway segment and City Council has authorized funding in the amount of $333,000.

Status

The engineering firm of Withers and Ravenel was contracted to evaluate the corridor for the preferred alignment and develop construction documents.

On April 9, 2009, the City of Raleigh received and opened eleven bids for the construction of Little Rock Greenway. Staff and the consultant thoroughly reviewed the bids, completed the bid tabulation and certification of bids. The apparent lowest responsive and responsible bidder is Eastern Services LLC dba Raleigh Paving. On May 5th, 2009, City Council approved the contract award to Eastern Services LLC dba Raleigh Paving.

Notice to Proceed with construction of the greenway was issued July13, 2009 and is scheduled to be completed February 2010.
