Design Process:

Convention Center schematic design illustrations (approved  10/14/04)
A four-step process has been completed for the schematic design of the new Raleigh Convention Center.

Phase 1 Uniqueness of Place.
The first phase was an exploration of materials and images resulting in an understanding of the "uniqueness of place" about Raleigh that the convention center design will need to address.  Discussions over this question took place on July 14.

Phase 2  Conceptual Design Ideas
The second step was to refine these general ideas into design concepts...specific materials and shapes that have meaning, the beginnings of a floor plan and some initial elevations of what the building may look like from the outside.  This discussion took place August 10, 2004.

Phase 3  Evolution of Character
On September 14 more meetings were held to discuss a more definitive evolution of the conceptual design for the convention center, aiming toward a preferred full schematic design concept in October.

Phase 4  Final Schematic Design
On October 12-14, 2004  meetings were held to review the schematic plan as revised since 9/14/04.   The City Council and County Commissioners approved the schematic design of the Convention Center on 10/14/04.  The approved design is represented by the drawings viewable in the column to the right.
