Department of City Planning - Student Internship Program
Be a part of a winning team. The Raleigh Department of City Planning is seeking enthusiastic, talented and energetic undergraduate and graduate students for internships with a focus on planning, urban design or related fields. Student internships are an excellent opportunity to work with a dynamic organization that is working to create a vibrant and livable city.
Within the Department, interns may serve in the City and Regional Planning Division, which is working on an update of the Comprehensive Plan, for the Urban Design Center, which works on design issues in our energized downtown, and/or in the Current Planning Services Division, which reviews development proposals in one of America’s fastest growing cities. Interns work in a variety of challenging capacities ranging from data collection to organizing written and graphic materials for presentations to the City Council and the Planning Commission.
Interns are assigned at least one major project expected to take about 2/3 of the intern’s total work time. Projects will include preparation of final reports/documents and a group presentation of the outcomes of the work. The remaining time is used for tasks exposing them to other aspects of the city planning department’s work. Interns are encouraged to participate in staff meetings, public meetings, City Planning Commission and City Council meetings to gain a better understanding of the operations and purpose of a professional planning department. Interns are supervised by a Senior Planner; all of the department’s staff members provide mentoring opportunities.
Kinds of Internships
There are generally four internships per year: two summer internships and two academic year internships. The two summer internships will run from approximately June 1 through August 15. The two academic year internships run approximately from October 1 through May 30.
Summer interns cannot work more than 7.75 in any day or 38.75 hours per week. Academic year interns cannot work more than 30 hours per week. Weekly hours are negotiable.

Internship announcements are posted at the beginning of April and mid-August on the Employment page of the City of Raleigh website in the Current Jobs - Internship Positions section. These announcements will include a description of the major projects that will be the focus of the intern’s experience.
An existing intern may reapply for a new summer or academic year internship during the open selection period.
Application procedures and exact deadlines are described in the Internship announcements.
