Environmentally Friendly Cleaners

A
ABRASIVE CLEANSER
-- Mix equal parts salt and baking soda. Scrub with mixture and wet sponge. Rinse with all purpose cleaner and warm water or half a lemon in borax.
AIR FRESHENERS
-- Baking soda, fresh flowers, herbs.
ALL PURPOSE CLEANER
-- Mix one-quarter cup of vinegar with one gallon of hot water. Also, baking soda, diluted liquid soap (not detergent), or borax is a good cleaner.

BATHROOM CLEANER
-- Scrub area with baking soda and wet sponge. Rinse with all-purpose cleaner.
BRASS OR COPPER POLISH
-- Mix one teaspoon salt, tablespoon of flour and vinegar to make a thick paste. Rub on surface and let dry. Rinse in warm soapy water and buff dry.

DISINFECTANTS
-- Use 1/2 cup borax in one gallon of water.
DRAIN CLEANER
-- Pour 1/4 cup of baking soda down drain; follow with 1/2 cup of vinegar. After fizzing stops, flush with boiling water. Better yet use plunger.

F
FLEA AND TICK PRODUCTS
-- Put brewer's yeast or garlic in pet's food; sprinkle fennel, rue, rosemary or eucalyptus seeds or leaves around animal sleeping areas.
FLOOR CLEANER
-- Mix one-half cup of white vinegar with one-half gallon of warm water.
FURNITURE POLISH
-- Mix one-half cup of lemon juice in one cup of mineral or vegetable oil.
FURNITURE STRIPPER
-- Use good old fashioned sandpaper!

GLASS CLEANER
-- Mix one tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice in one quart of water, spray on and use newspaper to wipe dry.

MOTHBALLS
-- Use cedar chips, lavender flowers, rosemary, mint, white peppercorns.

O
OVEN CLEANER
-- After oven cools use steel wool and baking soda; for tough stains, add salt (not for use on self-cleaning or continuous cleaning ovens).

P
PESTICIDES
-- Planting marigolds in your garden will ward off certain pests.
PET STAIN CLEANER
-- Mix one-quarter cup of white vinegar and one-quarter cup of liquid soap. Rub into stain and then blot. Rinse with warm water.
PLANT SPRAYS
-- Wipe leaves with mild soap and water, rinse.

ROACH AND ANT REPELLENT
-- Sprinkle powdered boric acid in cabinet edges, baseboards and cracks. For ants: place chili powder, talcum powder or powdered chalk at entry points
RUG DEODORIZER
-- Sprinkle liberally with baking soda, wait fifteen minutes and vacuum.

SILVER POLISH
-- Boil 2-3 inches of water in pan with 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon baking soda and sheet of aluminum foil, submerge silver boil 2 or 3 minutes dry.

TOILET BOWL CLEANER
-- Use a toilet brush and baking soda or vinegar.

UPHOLSTERY AND RUG CLEANER
-- Use dry cornstarch.
