Corporate Transportation Program

A Corporate Transportation Program is an organized program, by a company or business, that makes it easier for its employees to get to the company’s place of business. In addition to encouraging employees to consider other options (instead of driving to work alone in their cars), these type programs also encourage employees to take advantage of transportation alternatives and incentives. Since transportation is one of the main reasons companies have trouble finding and retaining workers, Corporate Transportation Programs are a great way to combat employment difficulties.

Benefits of a Corporate Transportation Program for the company include:

  • Tax deduction opportunities for the business
  • Ensuring employees arrive at work on time
  • Positive public relations
  • Helps companies with limited parking options
  • Additional company benefit or "perk"

Benefits of a Corporate Transportation Program for the employee include:

  • Increased employment benefit (if the company subsidizes ticket purchases)
  • Easier to purchase tickets
  • Employees can arrive at work on time and rested after an enjoyable ride
  • Decreased parking costs
  • Decreased commuting costs

Each company can tailor their Corporate Transportation Program to meet their needs, budget and estimated number of employees participating in the program. Programs can include:

  • CAT ridership brochures and information
  • Transportation Incentive
  • New Employee CAT Kit
  • Corporate Transportation Program Specialist
  • Orientations and presentations by City of Raleigh Transit staff

For information on establishing a Corporate Transportation Program at your company, call (919) 831-6785.

Transportation Incentive

This is a great incentive for an employee to use a CAT bus or a CATconnector. Companies can pay the transportation cost in any amount desired, from a small percentage discount to the full amount. Some companies offer graduated incentive amounts based on years of service. This can be deducted as a business expense for tax purposes–up to the cost of a monthly pass ($30) monthly per employee.

Companies can offer this benefit to their employees either through in-house ticket sales, payroll deduction or through the mail.

  • In-House Sales - This method allows CAT tickets and passes to be sold through the work site. On a monthly basis, tickets and passes are distributed to the company by CAT personnel. The company sells the tickets and passes at whatever price is determined in their Corporate Transportation Program. At the end of the month, the company pays for the full face value of all tickets and passes sold and returns any unsold ones.
  • Payroll deduction - Some companies offer the option of payroll deduction for the purchase of CAT tickets and passes.
  • By Mail - After obtaining a mail order form from CAT, the company completes it and mails it to the CAT operations office, with full payment. CAT processes the order and sends the requested number of tickets and passes back to the company. Companies should allow one week for processing and mailing. For details, call CAT at 833-5701.

New Employee CAT Kit

When new employees start to work for your company or business, include a CAT kit as part of your new employee orientation package. Included would be a sign-up sheet for enrollment in your Corporate Transportation Program.

CAT can provide free brochures and ridership materials for your new employees. These include such publications as the Rider’s Guide, route brochures and schedules, and system map.

Your company’s Transportation Specialist can coordinate with your Human Resources Department to ensure that new employees receive their CAT kits when they first begin work.

Corporate Transportation Program Specialist

The Corporate Transportation Specialist is the link between the company and its employees and Capital Area Transit. These specialists can help employees plan trips using the CAT buses, motivate employees to use public transit, coordinate ticket sales, keep employees updated on new services and special events with pubic transit, and serve as the company’s in-house transportation resource. City of Raleigh Transit staff are available as support staff to offer technical assistance.

Interested employees would work through the Corporate Transportation Program Specialist to sign up for the program. Employees would then automatically be included in each month’s ticket allotment, unless they notify the Program Specialist of a change in transit plans.

CAT will provide marketing materials and is available to answers questions and provide ongoing assistance.
